Salt-Updated

Below is a link to a very interesting article. I will give you some of the highlights but you really should read it all. This falls under that category of "it used to be bad for you and now it is good for you". However, the truth of the matter is that the way God made it is good for you. When man got involved, as usual, we messed it up.

http://www.mercola.com/forms/salt.htm

I have already purchased a brand of sea salt long before reading this particular article. No one in my family has noticed a change so that is good isn't it?

Here is the bad news.

For every gram of sodium chloride that your body cannot get rid of, your body uses twenty-three times the amount of cell water to neutralize the salt. Eating common table salt causes excess fluid in your body tissue, which can contribute to:

~Unsightly cellulite
~Rheumatism, arthritis and gout
~Kidney and gall bladder stones

When you consider that the average person consumes 4,000 to 6,000 mg of sodium chloride each day, and heavy users can ingest as much as 10,000 mg in a day , it is clear that this is a serious and pervasive issue.

Salt is essential for life - you cannot live without it. However, most people simply don't realize that there are enormous differences between the standard, refined table and cooking salt most of you are accustomed to using and healthy natural salt.

These differences can have a major impact on your staying healthy, or increasing your risk of diseases you want to avoid..

If you want your body to function properly, you need holistic salt complete with all-natural elements. Today's common table salt is poison that has nothing in common with natural salt.

Most common table salt is made up of chemicals that pollute your body and wreak havoc on your health. Pure Himalayan Crystal Salt contains no toxins and all 84 minerals and elements necessary for your optimal health!

Your table salt is actually 97.5% sodium chloride and 2.5% chemicals such as moisture absorbents, and iodine. Dried at over 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, the excessive heat alters the natural chemical structure of the salt causing the potential for a myriad of health problems in your body.

Now for the good news.

(Note from Kim: I am sure this Salt is good but I suspect this is also true about all good quality Sea Salt.)

Containing all of the 84 elements found in your body, the benefits of natural Himalayan Crystal Salt include:

Regulating the water content throughout your body.

Balancing excess acidity from your cells, particularly your brain cells.

Balancing your blood sugar levels and helping to reduce your aging rate.

Assisting in the generation of hydroelectric energy in cells in your body.

Absorption of food particles through your intestinal tract.

Help in clearing mucus plugs and phlegm from your lungs - particularly useful in
asthma and cystic fibrosis.

Acts as a strong natural antihistamine and helps clear up congestion in your sinuses

Prevention of muscle cramps.

Making the structure of your bones firm - osteoporosis can occur when your body needs more salt and takes it from your bones.

Regulating your sleep - it is a natural hypnotic.

Maintaining your libido.

Preventing varicose veins and spider veins on your legs and thighs.

Stabilizing irregular heartbeats - in conjunction with water it is actually essential for the regulation of your blood pressure.

Hi Kahri! You asked, "so do you grind your sea salt? or put it in a grinder for the table? "
I am pretty new at this so I will just tell you what I know. I purchased some that was already ground up. However, I want to do some more research on the best brands. There are many that you can purchase at the grocery store that come in a grinder. You can also purchase the salt grinders.

Here are some examples and a company I would purchase from.

This is a good brand and one of the best prices online. It's not as high in sodium as other sea salts.

Here's what a VERY health conscious (I'm talking they ONLY eat whole/live foods) friend says about it:
"we use Celtic Sea Salt, nearly exclusively. If we can't find it (or can't afford it) we buy another kind (New Zealand Sea Salt) which at least less processed (though the color and taste, as well as sodium content indicate it IS somewhat processed).

I've never found another kind of sea salt that is comparable to Celtic. The sodium content on regular sea salts is 630mg per serving, whereas celtic is 392mg.

Celtic has been lab tested and shown to contain at least 75 trace minerals (celtic salt analysis). It is a natural way to increase your iodine content, without needing to add meats (which have their own risk factors) or artificially supplement with iodine.

Another factor is many sea salts (such as Hain) that are granulated have additives that can be downright toxic (some contain as many as two excitotoxins and many contain baking soda).

The cheapest place we've found to buy it is Eden Foods online. French Celtic Sea Salt If someone lives out west it can be bought relatively cheaply through Azure Standard as well, though you have to buy a larger amount to get the value of the Eden price.

We use coarse for cooking, as it's cheaper and fine for after-cooking seasoning."
