While the girls and I were reading from a devotions book this morning,
"Just for Kids, 31 Daily Devotions-Kindness" I ran across the following quote.
"A BELIEVER COMES TO CHRIST
A DISCIPLE FOLLOWS AFTER HIM."
Vance Havner
(I didn't really know who Vance Hanver was so I had to look him up too. Click above to find out about him. )
This really made me stop and think. I have had many times where my girls questioned me about other Christians. The thought was, if they are Christians, like us why do they do (or don't do) such and such. Things we consider to be sin other people do and think nothing of it. When we see a sinner do that we are not surprised. Sinners are supposed to sin. Not a shocker there.
What about our other brothers and sisters? I usually talk to my girls about how Jesus talked about knowing people by their fruits. You don't expect a lemon tree to bear apples. What about Christians? Shouldn't the fruit they bear be the Fruit of the Holy Spirit ( love, joy , peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, self control, faithfulness, goodness). So the next question is are they truly believers?
This quote made me think about that. I think it is very true. I think there are people out there that are believers (in Jesus and salvation through him) but that is where it stops. The next step is being a believe in HIM and then also following HIM in your life. We should all strive to be HIS disciples and not just a believer. The way I look at it being a believer means you trust in Jesus for your salvation but being a follower means you trust HIM with your life. The one you are living right now. Do I trust HIM with my life now or just when I get to heaven? Do I trust that HE really knows what is best and will only do what is best for me? Do I truly follow HIM everyday or do I go my own way? These are some great things to ponder today.
