(yes, the sun was there too!)
I have done a lot of research on the sun, tanning, and sunscreens recently. I have always suspected something was wrong with the idea of hiding from the sun all the time. However, "science" said it was bad to get sun so we must hide. I wondered how all the people that lived 100 yrs. ago and beyond survived if they didn't smother themselves with sunscreen all the time.
If you believe everything you have been told in the last 20 yrs. or so everyone would have fallen over dead at a pretty young age. Every time that so called "science" disagrees with the Bible I wonder what is going to happen. I have seen many times where that happened that some time later that same so called "science" had a change of heart (ie. eggs, wine, butter, olive oil). Behold, the things that God created ARE good! Imagine that. Of course, if we had just read the Bible from the beginning we would have seen that.
Here is something that is helpful. "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good..." There wasn't a verse that followed that saying, "but be careful of the light and put on plenty of sunscreen". No, I am not suggesting that we go out and bake ourselves. We should certainly use wisdom and not over do it. As with anything you can get too much.
One of the most interesting things to me is that a sun tan actually PROTECTS us from sun burns. The sun burns are the problem not the tans. It makes a whole lot more sense to me that God would have created us this way. It makes sense he would have provided protection instead of us just having to hide in the day time. This was proven to me on our most recent vacation. When we went to the beach we all got sun burns. Not happy about that. However, it was obvious that my oldest daughter had the least, a bit of pink on her face, I think it was. We were at the ocean (with its wonderful cool breezes) for SEVERAL HOURS. The darkest one in the family would be Hannah and then her Dad. Catrina and I are the fairest of the family. What made the difference? Catrina had been going to a tanning bed to get ready for the trip. We were all red and in pain but she wasn't. She already had a tan so she was more protected than the rest of us by far. It wasn't on purpose but this turned into an interesting experiment.
Something else to consider is the age old comment....follow the money. Who benefits from us being afraid of the sun? Well, the logical answer would be the sunscreen companies. Do you know who owns the sunscreen companies? I didn't know this until recently but it is the pharmaceutical companies. Hmmm, makes you wonder doesn't it?
This link will take you to an article regarding a law suit. Here is a quote in the 3rd paragraph.
"The suit names as defendants Schering-Plough (which makes Coppertone), Johnson & Johnson (which makes Neutrogena), Playtex Products (which makes Banana Boat), Tanning Research Labs (which makes Hawaiian Tropic), and Chattem (which makes BullFrog)."
With a little digging I looked up each of these companies. All but one is obviously owned by or "partnered" with a pharmaceutical company. I am not 100% sure about the one company.
Here is some information from one of the links on this page.
"Few vitamins can provide such an array of health benefits as vitamin D. Sunshine is still the most economical and beneficial way to improve circulating vitamin D levels. In addition, the lack of sunlight exposure could lead to more than thinning bones and an increased risk for cancer--there is the added benefit of controlling cholesterol. Since vitamin D is produced naturally within the body, technically it is a hormone. Vitamin D precursors require cholesterol for conversion into the hormone-vitamin. Without adequate sun exposure, vitamin D precursors turn to cholesterol instead of the vitamin. The increased concentration of blood cholesterol during winter months and the fact that outdoor activity (gardening) is associated with lower circulating cholesterol levels in the summer, but not in winter, may explain geographical differences in coronary heart disease incidence.15
Sunning before 10 a.m. and after 3 p.m. avoids the sun's harshest UV radiation. People who live in areas of winter cloud cover, are homebound, or don't get enough sun should consider naturally compounded vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) supplements. "

In my search, I have learned that Rickets is on the rise. If you don't know what Rickets is read below. This was from Wikipedia but you can find information on it elsewhere.
...softening of the bones in children potentially leading to fractures and deformity. Rickets is among the most frequent childhood diseases in many developing countries. The predominant cause is a vitamin D deficiency, but lack of adequate calcium in the diet may also lead to rickets.."
How could Rickets be on the rise now? Are we getting less calcium? I can't imagine that could be the problem with the campaigns on drinking milk. I am starting to get the picture that when they government starts pushing it, be skeptical. (As a side note, my family gets our milk from a dairy. Much healthier!)

This article is short and to the point.
"SUNLIGHT ROBBERY:Health benefits of sunlight are denied by current public health policy in the UK"
One part of the article says the following....
"This ignores evidence that people who have a deep tan are less likely to get melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. While people who get sunburnt, an indication of extensive exposure to the sun, are less likely to get multiple sclerosis or prostate cancer. Oliver Gillie’s report, Sunlight Robbery, explains how government policy has gone badly wrong and urges people to sunbathe whenever they can, wearing as few clothes as possible, while taking care not to bake or burn."

Vitamin D deficiency symptoms
Vitamin D deficiency may be characterized by muscle pain, weak bones/fractures, low energy and fatigue, lowered immunity, depression and mood swings, and sleep irregularities. Women with renal problems or intestinal concerns (such as IBS or Crohn’s disease) may be vitamin D deficient because they can neither absorb nor adequately convert the nutrient.
Well, class that's all for today. I hope at the very least you are going to begin to question what you always thought was "fact". Do some digging on your own and see what you come up with. Feel free to leave me a comment. I love to know you are reading along with me.

Great blog! I love the sun and I always feel so much better about myself when I can just sit in the sunshine. Everything in your entry I completely agree with! Rickets...very interesting!
